Weirweb And Backdoor Trojans

WeirWeb is an adware program first seen on November 24th, 2008. WeirWeb represents a particularly high security risk because it is associated with a backdoor Trojan known as altpayV2.exe. If you are lucky enough to notice either of these programs on your computer before it is severely damaged, it is of utmost importance that you take every evasive maneuver available and get them off of your system as soon as humanly possible.

WeirWeb, in and of itself, is simply an adware program like any other. It tracks and records your browsing activity and sends that information off to a remote server. While this invasion of privacy is annoying and the barrage of pop ups may bog down your computer's processing speed, the aspect of WeirWeb that represents the highest threat is its association with the backdoor Trojan, altpayV2.exe.

Trojans are malicious applications that appear to do one thing, but actually do something completely different. A backdoor Trojan differs from a regular Trojan in that it also opens up a "backdoor" to your system, once it has been successfully installed. This newly created hole serves as both a portal to download more malicious software and as an access window for hackers to gain remote administrative access to your system. At this point, there is almost no limit to the illicit activity your computer can be used for.

If you suspect that a backdoor Trojan such as WeirWeb's altpayV2.exe has been installed on your computer, it may be necessary to completely reformat your hard drive, using backup files from an uninfected state. At the very least, install a firewall that closely monitors all inbound and outbound activity.

When you are certain that you are free of the Trojan, and are operating on an uninfected computer again, invest in software that is guaranteed to catch and/or remove 100% of all malicious software that finds its way onto your computer.

Due to the high number of rogue anti-spyware programs and legitimate anti-spyware programs that are incapable of removing a serious infection in its entirety, care is required in selection of quality anti-spyware. Make sure that the program you choose is legitimate and capable of 100% malware removal, or you may needlessly be risking another rendezvous with WeirWeb and its malicious counterparts.
